DeKalb, Exploring the Barb City
Nicknamed as the “Barb City,” DeKalb, Ilinois is part of DeKalb County and shelters more than 43,000 residents as of the 2010 census. The city was named after the heroic Franconian-French war general, Johann deKalb, who happened to die in the American Revolutionary War. The original name of DeKalb was actually Huntley’s Grove. The city has been nicknamed as such since it is the home of the development of the barbed wire, which was credited to Joseph Glidden, a local in the area. Glidden later mass-produced his creation and began a partnership with Isaac Ellwood, forming a company known as the Barb Fence Company.
