Plymouth City Airport – PLH
The Plymouth City Airport is called ‘mothballed’ airport in England because the area was retained with the aviation infrastructure and navigation aids although it was already closed. It is located within the city of Plymouth and had served Devon County, England and the nearby towns. The Plymouth City Airport, whose airport code is PLH, dates back to 1925 as the year of official opening by then future Edward VIII. It is owned by Plymouth City Council. The highest frequency of passenger was experienced in 2009. But it was in 2011 that the airport was closed and has ceased all operations due to the withdrawal of London flights.
Best Time to Visit
The PLH-Plymouth City Airport was opened in 1925 and was totally closed in 2011. The Plymouth business community disagree with the closure and the group called Viable made petition to the City Council. In 2014 the City Council decided to secure the airport for future aviation. A redevelopment plan was published by Sutton Harbor Holdings in 2017 to convert the airport into a garden suburb called Plym Vale. Contrary to the plan of SHH, the Plymouth City Council in the draft plan reserved the site for future general aviation use. As of this time, the shorter runway was partially built along residential houses and the airport was not yet fully converted to be a garden suburb nor fully reopened as an airport. The airport’s previous site is near to the city of Torquay.
