Tokamachi: Town of Kimono
Tokamachi, Japan is a city in Niigata first declared as a village in 1889. It was originally a part of the ancient Echigo. It officially became a town in 1897. In 1954, it merged with neighboring villages— Kawaji, Nakajo, and Rokka— and officially became a city. Its name was derived from the fact that a market used to be held in the area every 10th day of the month.
Best Time to Visit
With a humid climate, the best time to visit Tokamachi is during the months of April through June and September through October. The busiest months are usually January, March, and April. Tourists are least likely to visit in December. One of the most exciting events in the city is Tokamachi Snow Festival, which is held every third Saturday of February. Launched in 1950, it claims to be the first ever snow festival in the country. It features a lot of snow sculptures over 3 days. Another event to look forward to in the city is Tokamachi Kimono Festival, which is held every May. The city has a rich and unique history as a kimono and textile production center. As such, it is known as “town of kimono”. The festival celebrates this beautiful heritage.
