Amami Airport can be found in Amami, in Amami Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. It is located 13.6 miles northeast of the city. ASJ Airport first opened in June of 1964 as Amami Oshima Airport and located on what is now known as Amami Park. In 1988, a new airport, currently Amami Airport, was opened to serve as a jet airport with a new location along the coast and the first airport was closed. The length of the first runway made was 2,000 meters long. Later, the addition of a parallel taxiway took place as well as the addition of equipment namely a precision approach light and instrument landing device.
