The building was first opened in October 1993. In 2019, a further rebranding of the Toronto Centre for the Arts was announced. It is to be renamed into the Meridian Arts Center, which is a result of a new sponsorship deal with the theatre management and the Meridian Credit Union. The City government of Toronto owns the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Eberhard Zeidler designed the theatre building. The architect-designed the building specifically for use with theatre productions, musicals, and other types of performing arts.
