Owned and operated by the county, it was originally called Orange County Airport. In 1979, the airport took the name John Wayne Airport in honor of the actor John Wayne who lived in the neighboring Newport Beach who also happened to die during the same year. John Wayne’s statue was even installed in the SNA-John Wayne back in 1982.
